Outside Garmser, Afghanistan — About 2,300 U.S. Marines from the 24th Expeditionary Unit led an assault on Garmser, a town with about 100 insurgents in Southern Afghanistan. The town is a breeding ground for the country’s booming poppy industry–the flower used to make heroin.

There were no casualties for coalition forces, but an 11-year-old local boy was injured and taken to a British base for surgery. His condition is unknown at this time. There was no immediate word on the amount of insurgents killed or injured in the strike.

Marines found weapons and bomb-making material and detonated a roadside bomb during the assault. Commanders also reported using an assault helicopter to destroy a building the insurgents were using as a base.

It is feared that a conflict between the United States and Iran would severely cut the flow of oil, driving the price skyward.

White House says it has video evidence proving link between N. Korea & Syrian nuclear facility

Washington, D.C.–American intelligence officials will brief members of congress using visual evidence that the White House says proves North Korea was assisting Syria in building a nuclear reactor. Israeli planes bombed the building in September, although the U.S. and Israeli governments have refused to comment on the specific target of that strike.

Syria’s ambassador to the United States criticized the Bush administration for the plan saying that Syria has never had any nuclear project and telling CNN:

“This will be a ridiculous and pathetic charade… All the accusations are absurd and preposterous. This is exactly the same story as Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction… There is a proven record of this administration to fabricate lies.”

The news comes as the United States is trying to bring North Korea back to the table to resume six-party talks between the U.S., North Korea, Russia, Japan, China and South Korea. The U.S. wants North Korea to finally disclose its nuclear proliferation activity after it pledged last year to.
