UN Backs Piracy Land Pursuit

By admin • on December 17, 2008

The United Nations Security Council has approved a US resolution authorizing countries to pursue Somali pirates on land as well as at sea.
The resolution gives those states already involved in fighting piracy off the Somali coast a one-year mandate to act against the buccaneers inside the country. The move came as pirates hijacked four more vessels in the Gulf of Aden.
Increasingly emboldened pirates have attacked more than 100 ships this year, earning gunmen millions of dollars in ransom. The seizures have prompted some of the world’s biggest shipping firms to switch routes from the Suez Canal and send cargo vessels around southern Africa instead - a move which could push up the cost of commodities and manufactured goods.
